Q4 2014

This has been a big update. Usually we release major features weekly with minor features/fixes daily but this was a bigger release. There were over 200 changes/additions delivered in this release over 4 weeks.
Here is a high level history on our product evolution:
  • When we started we simply made it easier for people to find each other in closed networks based on how you can help, location, expertise, work history and education. A problem we had seen in both startup communities and the corporate world. It was a supercharged directory that was incredibly low friction... along with a powerful api.
Then we made it easier for:
  • people in the closed networks to request a meeting or book office hours with others.
  • people to connect via video by integrating with google video hangouts (while not revealing the real email addresses for those who wanted their email to remain private).
  • community managers to get reporting/metrics.
  • people to ask and answer questions to the broader community with a real focus on communication channels so everyone was not bombarded with everything.
  • for startup/vc ecosystems to have a "crm" on their portfolio (milestones, interaction history including meetings). This is turned off for non-startup organizations.
  • people to say thanks, a natural human workflow that helps with reputation and credibility.
  • for networks that trusted each-other to become federated in a way that shows the people but does not expose the closed network content.
  • People:
  • The display and search of people has been updated. Also a more complete tag set for auto mapping expertise has been added.
  • Spots:
  • Think of it like twitter with channels/topics for your closed network. This is were dynamic conversations happen. It all happens without friction because there is no creation of traditional "groups" and spots drop to they bottom as they become less active.
  • #Ask and #Alert are special. #Ask replaces the old questions and answers.
  • eg. Hey everyone! Can you help us by upvoting us on product hunt! #alert
  • Subscribe/Follow/Notifications:
  • You can subscribe/follow any channel (#marketing) or spot (eg. #vc or #growthHacking) or any particular post/question/conversation within a spot. Communications/Messaging:
  • We have made changes to all communications to minimize LaunchSpot and maximize the brand and value of each organization.
  • Onboarding experience:
  • We have made changes to the onboarding process. We still automatically analyze a users LinkedIn profile as we did in the past but now we also use a bit of twitter data when available to help lower the friction even further. Improved flow for CRM and mentorship (this is turned off for non-startup organizations):
  • For those communities that use LaunchSpot as a CRM on companies interactions along with Mentorship. We have improved the flow and display of this information.
  • Credibility:
  • New display for showing skills validation, number of thanks a person has received, number of thanks they have given, number of meeting hours, questions answered, etc.
  • Misc:
  • New companies section (for orgs with companies) - This allows companies to be searched and filtered by tags as well. Vertical's/Industry tags, etc. for companies are coming soon.
  • New Design/Layout making it more clear for meeting requests, meeting bookings, intro requests and thank-you's.
  • Spots:
  • Easily have Twitter like discussions around the topics that you want to discuss.
  • Spots are for you to share, have discussions and ask questions around the topics that are important to you. Don't worry if you have never used twitter - we make it easy for everyone.
  • When you identify the topic (spot) for your post (eg. #growthHacking) it ensures others who are interested will see it.
  • #Ask is a special hashtag that will notify those with the right expertise in a channel.
  • #Alert is to let everyone know there is something important you need. Use it wisely!
  • eg. Hey everyone! Can you help us by upvoting us on product hunt! #alert
  • You can also mention people @username in any post.
  • Share from twitter to launchspot by using #ls4share (coming soon)
  • Channels:
  • When making a post select a channel (Technology, Marketing, Sales, etc.) to ensure the right people will know about your question/post.
  • Event RSVP:
  • You can now RSVP to events we post so we can know if you are attending.
  • Events can still be seen in a calendar view or you can subscribe to events in your own calendar or you can subscribe/view #events in spots.
  • Expertise labels:
  • A more complete tag set around expertise.
  • Request Intro/Shared Connections:
  • We show you shared connections so when you need an intro you know who to ask.
  • New Design/Layout making it more clear for meeting requests, meeting bookings, intro requests and thank-you's.
  • Ability to confirm meetings without signing in.
  • Onboarding experience:
  • All existing users will be taken through the new onboarding wizard. This is a re-designed onboarding experience that is more magical.
  • We still analyze a users LinkedIn profile as we did in the past to populate high-level expertise and details expertise.
  • Now we also use a bit of twitter data when available to help lower the friction even further.
  • After the initial analysis is done the user is now given a guided tour of what they can do next in the platform.
  • #Announcements:
  • As admins or staff for your organization you can now post announcements to the community. If you mark the announcement as #urgent then it will send an email notification to everyone in your community.
  • If you do not mark it as #urgent then it will go out in the weekly/monthly email summary.
  • Any #announcements can be replied to within LaunchSpot by the people in your community so you can capture any discussions around the announcement.
  • Subscribe/Follow:
  • You can subscribe/follow any channel (#marketing) or spot (eg. #vc or #growthHacking) or any particular post/question/conversation within a spot.
  • Users by default are subscribed to their expertise channel (eg. #technology) along with #events and #alert. They can unsubscribe from them if they wish BUT they can not post to #alert if they are not subscribed to it.
  • Usernames:
  • You now have your own unique @username in the platform.
  • Usernames are unique across the platform so sign in and get your preferred username now.
  • We give you a default username but you can change it during the onboarding process.
  • Interactions:
  • All interactions between participants go from their username@messaging.launchspot.io account. The same user email preferences/filters/rules apply.
  • Expertise labels:
  • A more complete tag set around expertise.
  • CRM & Mentorship:
  • For those communities that use LaunchSpot as a CRM on companies interactions along with Mentorship. We have improved the flow and display of this information.
  • Credibility:
  • New display for showing skills that have been thanked, number of thanks a person has received, number of thanks they have given, number of meeting hours, etc.
  • Note: Some of these metrics have a placeholder until we turn on the display of this information.
  • Misc:
  • New companies section (for orgs with companies) - This allows companies to be searched and filtered by tags. Vertical's/Industry tags, etc. for companies are coming soon.
  • New Design/Layout making it more clear for meeting requests, meeting bookings, intro requests and thank-you's.
  • Ability to confirm meeting without signing in.

July 2014

    Insights
  • Now you can get data insights into your organization to help drive informed decisions on programs, education, structure and more.
Want to know what programs or education your people need? Need to understand the high level skill areas (eg. marketing, technology, sales) a cohort, group, or mentors have? Want to see which skill areas get the most questions and the people who get contacted the most? Want to drill down to see the breakdown of hard skills your people have in a skill area (ie. Technolgoy - php, node.js, mysql, nosql, etc.)?
Introducing our Insights module - which provides these insights and more!
  • Ask a question, get an answer (updated and available for everyone):
  • Based on feedback from our early adopter networks - Answers has been slimed down, redesigned and is now available for all networks. Ask a question and all the people in the network with expertise in that topic area will be notified. Ask a question, get an answer - simple.
  • You can now ask an individual a question, a expertise area a question or ask everyone in the network a question.
  • Announcements (targeted communications):
  • You have been asking for the ability to target segments of your network for communications. You are tired of parsing spreadsheets or managing groups in email or managing groups in mailchimp. Now you can just search (filter if necessary) and send a communication from LaunchSpot to any targeted group of people within your network. Use the send announcement button that shows up at the top of the search results.
  • Want to send a communication to mobile developers only? You can do that. Want to send a communication to a specific cohort, department, division or high level skill area? Now you can. Want to send a message to js developers only? Now you can.
  • Reputation:
  • Thank You - Want to send a quick note to say thanks - we have enabled this and made it easy. This note and confirmed expertise gets sent to the person via email. The fact that the person was thanked also builds their overall reputation.
  • Search & Filters:
  • We spent a lot of time improving search and adding filters for this release! Filter by groups, past work, education, skills, location and more. Updated design - flip cards are back!
  • Ever since we removed the flip cards people have been commenting on how much they missed them and letting us know that they wanted them back. You asked, we listened. Flip cards are back in this version!
  • We also did a major update to LaunchSpot's overall design based on feedback and to better handle the answers and search functionality.
  • Other updates:
  • Org setting to display real emails with personal profile override (users can pick if they want to use the launchspot email or their real email).
  • Org setting to display phone numbers with personal profile override (users can pick if they want to display a phone number).
  • Office hours can now be entered from your office hours page instead of using your google/outlook calendar.
  • Office hours can now be specified per organization.
  • EIR role has been added for startup communities.
  • Multiple bug fixes.
